Buy this CDReleased on March 28 (why is it always Tuesday?), Gerald Albright’s newest project hit the street.  It is a wonderful showcase for his virtuosity and versatility.  He plays his saxes and bass guitar.  He writes, arranges, produces, engineers, and programs on this album.

Jeff Lorber collaborates with Albright on most of the tracks, co-writing and showing his own performing skill.  Lorber leads a talented supporting cast including Chuckii Booker and Mano Hanes.

Gerald Albright is the undisputed master of the altissimo grace note, popping in and out of the upper register with amazing control of timing and dynamics.  If I were to name this CD, it would be “Timing is Everything” because of this talent and several pointed pauses.  He is also a master of NOT playing at just the right time, pausing for great effect.

“We Got the Groove” is an upbeat, fun number that has great moves.  “New Beginnings” has a more traditional feel with lots of changes and solos by Albright and Patrice Rushen on piano.  “Deep in My Soul” has (another) great hook; the introspective feel gives way to the joy as it progresses.

“Take Your Time” has a techno staccato feel.  “I Want Somebody,” “You Are My Love,” “Last But Not Least” and “I Need You” are simpler and quieter numbers, full of emotion.  All are a listening pleasure!

Albright wrote all these songs except “And the Beat Goes On” and “Georgia on My Mind.”  He makes his mark on these two as well.  His cover of “Georgia” is to die for.  The extended ending is my personal favorite passage on this CD.  It is classic Albright, balancing solo sax, percussive orchestra and a wide dynamic and timing range.

New Beginnings is Gerald Albright’s 12th CD and an excellent addition to his portfolio and music in general.
