The final album from extraordinary Chicago saxman, Art Porter, is a very smooth album, more so than others of his, in which Art gave more improvisations.  The melodies throughout are great and at times even infectious.  For this reviewer, Porter's last CD was my first, and I have come to enjoy and appreciate the legacy he has left behind.

The breakout track on this CD is “Lake Shore Drive,” a soprano sax classic.  Fast-paced, terrific hooks, and totally radio-friendly.  It speaks smooth jazz!  The CD is spotted with vocals from such greats as Lalah Hathaway and Brian McKight, which always means it will be a memorable tune.  Both of these vocalists add so much character to anyone’s album, and the tunes “One More Chance,” Just Wanna Be With You,” and “Forever Love” are no exception.

Throughout the CD, Art switches between alto and soprano saxes, giving each tune its own personality, and the CD as a whole a good flow.  At times, though, you forget that the main ingredient is a sax because the vocals and heavy bass lines take over, but still the flavor and passion are there.

The title track, which is too good to be left as the CD closer, is a really killer track.  Again, offering a catchy soprano melody and funky grooves, this showed Art at his best.  And “DB Blue” is a gritty, beat-laden tune sure to get you moving.

This CD offers a varied mix of funky, upbeat tunes and gentle ballads.  I was glad that this was where I first heard Art Porter and was able to go backwards from there on the collection.  Who knows where this master may have gone if he hadn’t been taken too soon.
