In 1994, saxophone player Warren Hill released his third CD, Truth.  Even though it was his third, it was my first Warren Hill CD.  I was drawn to his music after hearing “Do You Feel What I’m Feeling?” on the late night smooth jazz quiet storm type radio show of whatever station I was listening to at that time.  After hearing that song, I was soon searching for the CD of the artist whose song had gotten me hooked the night before.

With a little effort, I found what I was looking for.I played Truth frequently; at home, at work, and everywhere in between.  The music on this CD is hip and heartfelt, sensitive and sensual.  From the opening song, “Tell Me All Your Secrets,” to the end, “Naked,” each song delivers a solid musical experience.  Many of his songs are very personal.  “Tamara” is a beautiful ballad, a love song to his wife.  “Time for a Change “and “Good-bye L.A.” tells the story of how he left L.A. for Tennessee.

Warren Hill wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on this album.  His playing is fresh, energetic and powerful.  Although he’s equally adept at playing the up-tempo songs, I think he’s at his best playing the mid-tempo ballads, like “Miss You Forever” and the excellent “When a Woman Loves a Man.”  Either way, it’s all Warren and it’s all good, and it remains one of my Warren Hill favorites.
