(Roll theme music, “Grazing in the Grass”)

This is BogeyDog, your correspondent for Dogs on Jazz. I have been asked to supply an occasional article for SmoothViews for a closer to the floor perspective on smooth jazz music.

Joining us for our first interview for Dogs on Jazz is renowned bari saxophonist Perro Barquieri. Perro is one of the most inspiring players in the business. If you've ever seen him perform live, you know what I mean. The dog is amazing. Perro took time out of his busy schedule to sit and speak with us about his distinguished career and his upcoming project on the Four Paws label.

Perro Barquieri (PB): Sniff, sniff, sniff.
Dogs on Jazz (DOJ): Sniff, sniff, sniff.
PB: Yip!

DOJ: Sorry, cold nose ;) Perro, yo dog, may I call you Perro?
PB: Your mother is a perra! Of course you can call me Perro.

DOJ: Watch that mother stuff. She is sensitive about labels. You have a great sound on the sax. Have you been playing long?
PB: I turned pro four years ago which is a significant part of my expected 12-year life span.

DOJ: Impressive! You do not look your age. In fact you look marvelous. Who does your hair?
PB: Very funny; you can see I am HAIRLESS, goldenrod!

DOJ: Sorry, I thought you just had a buzz. Are you cold? We could turn up the heat.
PB: No, I am going through detox. I shake. Pay it no mind.

DOJ: Understood. Back to your music. How did you achieve that rich tone?
PB: Love - unrequited, emotional involvement with the music, and #3 Rico Jazz Selects. Actually, being a Chihuahua, it took some time to even be able to play the bari. Reaching the keys is contorting. Once I was able to play, that was the sound that came out. It was pure luck.

DOJ: Who was your inspiration?
PB: I credit my brother for taking up the horn and entering the industry.

DOJ: Yes, we miss your brother on TV. What is he up to these days?
PB: The Taco Bell run was a wild ride for him. He did not deal with the fame well and we had to send him down.

DOJ: THE BIG SLEEP?!
PB: No, we sent him back to the family hacienda in Mexico.

DOJ: Tragic. We hope to see him back on top soon. What are your future plans?
PB: My new CD will soon be released. It is a cathartic working-through of abuse in my early life called Rolled up Newspaper.

DOJ: Just the title evokes fear and betrayal.
PB: I am MUCH better now. The tour will focus on more upbeat numbers from my last two CDs and show tune covers.

DOJ: YOU are into show tunes? ME TOO! Our readers will certainly be looking forward to your show coming to their towns soon. Thank you so much for your time!
PB: De nada! I just want to say mucho gracias to all my fans!
